Samsung Refrigerator Ice Maker Recall: What Irvine Homeowners Need to Know

Hey, Earl here from Eden Appliance Repair. I’ve been getting a lot of calls this month about the Samsung refrigerator ice maker situation, so I figured it was time to lay it all out in one place for my Irvine and South Orange County neighbors.

What’s Going On With Samsung Ice Makers?

Samsung has issued recalls and service bulletins affecting the ice makers in several of their popular French Door refrigerator models. The core issue is a design flaw in the ice maker assembly that can cause the unit to freeze over, leak water into the refrigerator compartment, or stop producing ice altogether. In some cases, ice can build up around the ice maker housing and actually force the refrigerator door open slightly — which then causes your food to spoil.

This isn’t a new problem. Samsung has been dealing with ice maker complaints for years, and it’s finally resulted in formal recall actions and a class-action settlement. If you own a Samsung French Door refrigerator manufactured between 2014 and 2022, pay attention.

Which Models Are Affected?

The recall and associated service bulletins cover a broad range of Samsung French Door models. The most commonly affected include:

  • RF28HMEDBSR — One of Samsung’s best-selling French Door models
  • RF263BEAESR — The 26 cu. ft. French Door
  • RF28HDEDBSR — The Food Showcase model
  • RF23HCEDBSR — The counter-depth French Door
  • RF28JBEDBSG — The black stainless version
  • RF261BEAESR — The 26 cu. ft. with filtered ice

There are more, but these are the ones I see most often in Irvine homes. The full list is available on Samsung’s recall page and through the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) website.

Symptoms to Watch For

If you own one of these models, here’s what to look for:

  1. Ice buildup under the ice maker — Open the freezer and look underneath the ice maker assembly. If you see a sheet of ice forming on the floor of the freezer or around the housing, that’s the defect in action.
  2. Water leaking from the freezer — Water pooling under your refrigerator or dripping from the freezer door is a telltale sign.
  3. Ice maker stops producing ice — The assembly freezes over internally and just quits.
  4. Refrigerator door not sealing — Ice buildup can physically push the door open a crack. You might notice your fresh food side running warmer than usual.
  5. Frost on food in the refrigerator compartment — Cold air from the freezer leaking through a bad seal or warped door can cause frost in places it shouldn’t be.

What Should You Do?

Here’s my honest advice, based on having repaired hundreds of Samsung refrigerators over the past 15 years:

Step 1: Check if your model is covered. Look at the model number on the sticker inside your refrigerator (usually on the left wall of the fresh food compartment). Cross-reference it with Samsung’s recall list.

Step 2: Contact Samsung. If your model is covered, Samsung is offering free repairs and in some cases replacement ice maker kits. You can reach them at 1-800-726-7864 or through their website. They’ll schedule a Samsung-authorized technician to install the updated ice maker assembly.

Step 3: Don’t wait. I’ve seen too many Irvine homeowners put this off because the fridge “still mostly works.” The ice buildup gets worse over time, and water damage to your kitchen floor isn’t covered by Samsung’s recall remedy.

Step 4: If Samsung can’t schedule you quickly, call us. Samsung’s recall service has been backed up for months. Long wait times, rescheduled appointments, technicians who no-show — I hear about it every week. If you’re tired of waiting, Eden Appliance Repair can install the updated ice maker kit or perform the repair using the same Samsung-specified procedure.

What About the Class Action Settlement?

There’s also a class-action settlement that may entitle you to reimbursement for past repair costs or a partial refund on your refrigerator. If you’ve already paid out of pocket for ice maker repairs on an affected model, you may be able to file a claim. I’d recommend checking the settlement website or consulting with a consumer rights attorney — but act soon, as these claims have deadlines.

The Bottom Line

Samsung makes some solid refrigerators, but this ice maker issue is real and widespread. If you’re in Irvine, Tustin, Newport Beach, or anywhere in South Orange County and you’re dealing with a Samsung ice maker problem, don’t just throw bags of ice in a cooler and hope it fixes itself.

Give us a call at (949) 207-7599. Whether your model is covered by the recall or not, we’ll diagnose the issue, explain your options honestly, and get your refrigerator working right. That’s what we’ve been doing in this community since 2011.
